'La Condenada' meaning 'The Condemned' is a reference to the recent history of the site - although the vineyard was planted in the 1920's it was left abandoned for several years by it's previous owner and had to be painstakingly restored to health by Arturo and Kiki. The site is at the highest point of an outcrop above Banos de Ebro, a ridge so weathered that the vines dig directly into fractured rock. Nothing in this site can be done mechanically; picking, plowing, pruning all entail clambering between odd shaped vines haphazardly planted in between the rocks. The previous owner became too old to manage the task and with no family to pass the vineyard on to he was left with the option of selling or letting it slowly die. Back then Arturo and Kiki were not in a position to buy and the old man chose to let it die rather than sell to an outsider - such is the parochial nature of some parts of Spain 'outsider' in this instance didn't just mean the big wineries owned by foreign corporations but also meant all those upstarts from Madrid or San Sebastian lured to Rioja in search of vinous-fame. In every vintage it's incredibly hard to pick a better wine between the two, but the consistency of personality is remarkable - where's Escolladero always throws off beautiful high toned fruit from day one; La Condenada broods, stays muted, needs time and air but patients becomes an immensely impressive wine.

Artuke's 'El Escolladero' together with stable mate 'La Condenada' are what Arturo and Kiki consider their "Grand Cru" vineyards in the organisation of Artuke, borrowing heavily from the Burgundian system that they both admire. Unlike the lower zones of Valle de la Orotava or Taganana further to the east, the Benje sites are less subject to the cooling Aliosos trade winds, but the added altitude brings it's own sense of freshness to the wines of this zone. Huge volumes of wine is grown here, usually for blending with the more prestigious and expensive Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta vineyards or to be tricked up with cheap oak and oxidation to mimic the great old traditional houses of Rioja. In the opinion of Javier, however, this was a missed opportunity; sure the flatter areas and red soils of Rioja Baja may not make the finest 'Grand Cru' worthy Tempranillo but it was perfectly capable of growing delicious, honest wines that are true to their origins - exactly as Javier's friend German was doing in Ribera del Duero with Quinta Milu. The vines here weave over and under the soil as branches have been weighed down and buried as a means of grafting in the phylloxera free island soil, meaning it's almost impossible to determine vine ages or even determine where a single vine begins or ends. The branches above the ground are propped up only by "Y" shaped sticks, which have an unfortunately tendency to fall over in heavy wind. Quite frankly Margalagua is a vineyard unlike anything we have ever seen before, in a way it's a glimpse into what viticulture may have looked like if phylloxera never existed and that adds to the sense that the Canary Islands are part of some parrellel universe of the wine world - a Jurrasic Park for varietals, styles, viticulture that long ago died out in the rest of Spain. It's too hard to talk about varietals, I could name some of them but it doesn't help to understand the wine, it's suffice to say that there's probably twelve or thirteen different ones going into this wine. As for what it tastes like, for that i'll quote directly from Luis Gutierrez, he's a Spanish journalist so he's more impartial than I am... "If the village was impressive, the one sourced from a specific plot was other worldly... There is more depth and complexity than in the village reed, a tantalizing mixture of peppers and stones, with a herbal touch, aromatic and changing the glass. Mostly Mencia, with about 15% of an array of other local varieties (Merenzao, Caino, Garnacha Tintorerra...) that's been fermented in small lots, parcel by parcel with indigenous yeasts and then kept in a variety of barrels and concrete tanks for 12 months without racking. The result is that Seoane always looks more lifted, elegant and immediately attractive than the darker brooding Camino Novo. There's almost white flower characters among the bright raspberry and violet tones more commonly associated with Mencia. Perched on the edge of the River Sil along the 'Golden Mile' of the Amandi sub-region, Camino Novo is an 80 year old vineyard that curls around a bend in the river meaning it's somewhat more protected from the sun and warming winds than it's neighbour, Parcela Seoane. In the wine this translates as the more savoury, structured, more 'masculine' of the two wines. As Luis Gutierrez wrote 'it's a mysterious, telluric wine, nuanced and perfumed.
