Castro Ventosa Cepas Centenarias

  • Producer: Castro Ventosa
  • Type: Aromatic
  • Region: Atlantic

Castro Ventosa's original grand vin, first produced in 1999, and it remains one of the most impressive wines to come out of Bierzo. It's sourced from a single plot of true centenarian, co-planted field-blend vines on sandy clay soils, predominantly Mencía with small amounts of Bastardo and other historic varieties woven in. The wine ferments with a portion of whole clusters and indigenous yeasts through a long maceration before spending twelve months in French oak, and production is tiny — often only a few thousand bottles a year.

The result is a profound, layered wine: intense aromas of violets, wild herbs, cherries, and raspberries wrapped around earthy, complex undertones, with a velvety, elegant palate and a persistent, concentrated finish that keeps drinkers coming back for another sip.

This is widely considered a reference point for the entire Bierzo appellation and one of Spain's most impressive reds, full stop.

Some say the future of Spanish wine lies in its past. If that’s true, Envínate’s already there — four mates making wild, beautiful wines with one foot in the old world and the other kicking down the door.
